Threshold:NRC

(Not Recommended for Children?)

We're living in times of tremendous change and unrest. It is an age of information saturation around a staggering number of breaches of fundamental human rights - even within our own country. Against this is a backdrop of information on colossal environmental degradation in a cyclical cause and effect of climate change, spiraling us ever further into The Anthropocene and, given the level of predicted biospherical hostilities it boasts, we sense deep within us that this is nothing to celebrate. How on Earth do we receive and process such overwhelming information, especially when it outlines experiences that can be far from our own? Often, the more personal horrors we can imagine are more frightening than the larger we just cannot yet comprehend - but they all sit within us, developing deep unease.

In many of his works, renowned choreographer and dancer, Dean Walsh, has wrestled subject matter close to the bone and home ever since his very first trio, 'Homme Fatale' in 1991. In 2007, after commencing scuba diving, he moved his practice into researching marine environmental awareness and the science that underpins it. He has gradually worked towards building an interrelationship between his dance, diving, and collaborations with marine environmental experts. Dean's practice is inclusive of people living with diverse bodies and minds and encourages all people to reflect upon marine and climate change understandings through an embodied, creative approach.

In Threshold:NRC, Dean rolls out a series of lores and questions (danced and spoken) around key aspects of his research and all he has learned and lived through. He brings the perspective of a mature dance practitioner with a sustained passion to engaging individual and communal activation against the growing solastalgia*. Threshold:NRC is a dance of the soliphilia*.
